...Tri, Tri Again.

Upon moving north last November there was a couple months in which Melissa and I didn't get much in the way of physical exertion and I (Roger) felt the pudge pounds packing on. Working out is it's own reward, but... not really. I needed outside motivation and decided in February that maybe I could race a triathlon this summer. Well, summer is here and in 2 weeks I am doing the Blue Lake Triathlon in Troutdale (yes, real place), Oregon.

I'm not exactly designed for speed. I'm about 4 inches shorter and about 30 pounds heavier than most endurance athletes. So be it. The goal isn't to beat the clock, the goal is to motivate my workouts and push into some new athletic teritory. So I have been getting a run, bike or swim workout (or a combination of such) several days a week throughout the past 14 weeks to get ready for this thang.

This morning I did my first full distance practice race. It was at an event sponsored by the Portland Triathlon Club and was right here in Vancouver. It was hard. And I was moving pretty slow the last couple miles. But, I went 1/3 mile swimming, 12 miles biking, and 3 miles running in 102 minutes. And lived to blog about it!

In 2 more weeks I will do the official race. Wish me well...

thanks for the encouragement, y'all!

If you hear in the news that they are dredging the lake for a lost triathlete in Washington; it's probably me.
